Not enough housing

Big cities are becoming more crowded and urbanisation is pushing more people from rural areas into the city.

Village life is growing increasingly unattractive. Most people want to live in more vibrant places. This behaviour has consequences. The most tangible effect is felt on the house market.

The rate at which people are moving to the city exceeds our ability to construct new housing at a rapid pace and in sufficient quantities. And even this were different: There is not enough space for all of us. Plus, major cities also need space for major parks, whether in Germany or elsewhere. Think of New York. It wouldn’t be the same without Central Park. There is a limit to the amount of housing in a city.

This also applies to the limited space available in apartments.

RENTING A STORAGE BOX

Before we delve into the tips for optimising a small apartment, allow us to introduce a model that is well-suited for those with limited space.

If you live in a small place, you need the space you have to express yourself fully and live your life. You won’t have much room for storage purposes, even if you only need it for the time being.

There is a solution to this: Renting a storage box.

Good news: Renting a storage box is not difficult at all. Come to LAGERBOX and we’ll take of everything else.

Rent a storage box here to store all the belongings that won't fit in your house. They can be all kinds of things, including old furniture, lever arch files, or valuable keepsakes.

Things you want to keep, but you don’t need in your everyday life. Storing them elsewhere will open up space and help you and your apartment to breathe. Over 16,000 people in Germany are already using the many LAGERBOX services. You can rent storage boxes at over 30 locations. With such a high number, there is always a storage facility nearby.

Now for the best part: You can choose between a range of different sizes. We want you to rent the space you need and nothing more. If you need a unit with more or less space, even at short notice, making the change is straightforward and hassle-free. To estimate how much space you need, use our online size calculator.

From experience, we know that people need more room to store all their things more often than you think. An example: A couple tries out living together in one flat before moving into a bigger flat together.

Moving the furniture and household belongings from two people into a small apartment quickly creates space problems.

There are countless other scenarios where people use the services offered by LAGERBOX. We will gladly receive packages and deliveries for our business customers, whether they operate a small online shop or a global brand.

This reduces the workload for companies and any deliveries are put straight into storage.

TIPS FOR LIVING WITH LITTLE SPACE

Now let’s talk about tips for how you can make the most of a small apartment.

Our first tip is to use high ceilings. Many apartments, especially turn-of-the-century buildings in large cities, often have high ceilings that are rarely used.

Maximise the use of this vertical space. This can be done using a loft bed, for example, or a large cupboard that goes covers the entirety of a wall. If you’re a person of shorter stature, we recommend buying a mini ladder as well. Large mirrors and windows can contribute to making the room appear larger.

Here’s our second tip: Use flexible furniture. We see again and again that this method is not yet widely used. The most well-known approach is the pull-out sofa. But there is other flexible furniture, i.e., furniture that has more than one purpose. A bed, a desk, and a cupboard – if you put everything together, you save a lot of room. And we don’t want to knock pull-out sofas. They are a great way to save space during the daytime.

Customising furniture to fit your apartment is also an option. Tailored furniture fits perfectly and therefore doesn’t waste space.

If you want a space to appear fuller, you can use large pieces of furniture despite the limited space. Many people say this doesn’t work, but that’s a misconception. However: It’s important to finding balance. Don’t overload your flat.

A lack of light also makes a space appear smaller than it is. Make sure you get enough daylight in to make your flat seem bigger. If daylight is scarce, good use of lamps can also work. But, of course, windows are essential. If you’re lucky and have large windows, they make a room appear significantly larger.

Those who are adventurous and willing to try new things can consider expanding the living area by removing partition walls. In general, we recommend being creative and taking action. There are no limits to what your creativity can accomplish.
