Rent storage space for renovations
Renovating your home can be draining. Anybody who has undertaken home improvements knows this.
People who haven’t undertaken any home improvements frequently underestimate them. The most important thing to consider is to always have a plan in place and to work through the individual tasks in a fixed order. Otherwise, the many small tasks will quickly become very chaotic. To prevent this, LAGERBOX will give you some tips on how to better organise said chaos.
The most important tip first: Book a self-storage unit. One thing you truly don’t need when renovating is to have your things standing in the way, for example, big pieces of furniture. Make it easier for yourself by booking short-term storage and using it to conveniently store all the items you don’t need while renovating.
And who knows? You might discover that you don’t want everything back but want to try new things instead. In that case, you can simply leave your things with us at LAGERBOX and take care of them later. Our self-storage concept is an ideal fit for renovation projects.
Needless to say, the reasons for undertaking home improvement and refurbishment projects are very diverse and not everything is the same in every house or apartment. Your personal situation might be different and not every tip will apply to every situation.
These are the subject areas we want to look at: Repairing walls and running new cables, painting walls and wallpapering, repairing floor tiles, repairing bathroom fixtures and furniture, filling gaps, cutting, replacing, cutting and installing carpets, refinishing plank flooring and wooden stairs, and painting window frames.
Let’s begin with some tips on repairing tiles. Best to start by drilling the tiles and then you can replace the floor tiles, cool them, and cut them properly. For hard tiles, it’s best to use an electric tile cutter. For larger holes, a tile hole cutter is recommended. It’s best to start by putting the tiles into place in the corners. Apply the adhesive and then fill the gaps. It’s also possible to layer tiles on top of existing tiles. Unsightly tiles can be saved with tile varnish. What’s the most important thing to look out for? Pay attention to waterproofing and clean filling of gaps.
The second category is repairing bathroom fixtures and furniture. The first thing to attend to here is to repair broken pot hinges, touch up the enamel, and repair any dents in the acrylic coating. Note: When mixing the putty and the hardener, the room must be well ventilated and protective gloves must be worn. The next step can be to refinish the surface of the bathtub and remove the mirror.
Now, it’s time to retouch the silicone between your tiles – step by step. Begin by preparing the surfaces and ensuring a clean surface for putting in the new silicone sealant. From experience, we recommend buying quality silicone from a branded manufacturer. Next up, get rid of any limescale in your bathroom. When working with plaster, make sure to take two hours for everything to dry. Only use stainless screws and watch out for chrome fittings.
The next step is the carpet. If your carpet has holes, for example, it is possible to work one carpet into another. Special attention has to be given to fitting it properly. Like before, it’s custom to start fitting the carpet in the corners, then cut the carpet with a special carpet knife. Patchwork should be avoided but can also look good in some cases. To get rid of things in a carpet, it helps to use a hole punch. The piece of carpet in front of your door comes right at the end.
What next? Refinishing plank flooring and wooden stairs. First, notch out the heating pipes, then cut out where the heating pipe goes, and sand the floorboards. Now to cover the stairs, examine the creaking step, fix the tread squeaks, consider the riser steps, remove varnish, use a paint stripper, sand turned profiles, and tone down the white varnish.
The last step is painting the window frames. To do so, start by taping off the window frames. Make sure to store your brushes properly and to use the right brush for the job. Avoid clumps in the paint. Then apply the spray paint and make sure you paint it correctly with the diagonal line first. Apply the paint to the lattice right at the end.
When embarking on a home improvement project, there are many things to do. No matter how long it will take you, a safe and worthwhile option is to rent storage space to avoid problems while you’re renovating and to prevent possible damage to your things.
